Outage Readiness Checklist

Use these twenty questions to determine whether your organization can operate through an internet, SaaS, or cloud outage.

Score one point for every “Yes.” A score below 15 indicates meaningful continuity gaps worth addressing.

Systems and Data

  1. Have you identified every business-critical application?
  2. Do you know where the underlying data is stored?
  3. Do you maintain a current local copy of priority data?
  4. Can staff access essential files without internet?
  5. Are recovery dependencies documented?

People and Process

  1. Do employees know what to do during an outage?
  2. Are offline procedures written and accessible locally?
  3. Are application owners and recovery roles assigned?
  4. Can leadership communicate without normal cloud tools?
  5. Have you defined which services recover first?

Technology

  1. Can local infrastructure support priority workloads?
  2. Is synchronization health actively monitored?
  3. Are local systems protected by strong access controls?
  4. Is there enough capacity for the intended offline window?
  5. Can changes be reconciled safely after recovery?

Testing and Recovery

  1. Have you tested an internet outage scenario?
  2. Have you tested a cloud application outage?
  3. Have you validated recent restores?
  4. Do you measure recovery time and data freshness?
  5. Is the continuity plan reviewed at least annually?

Interpreting your score

16–20: Strong

Your organization has a solid foundation. Focus on routine testing and improvement.

10–15: Exposed

Some controls exist, but an outage could still create major operational disruption.

0–9: High Risk

The business is likely dependent on cloud and internet availability with limited alternatives.
